Our Story

CAIRS began with a problem that could not be ignored.

While working with Air Force communications environments, telephone installer Leonard Vanderhoven and AT&T Regional Vice President Richard Motzkus saw firsthand how difficult it was to manage complex telecommunications infrastructure with incomplete records, disconnected processes, and tools that were not built for the mission. They recognized the need for a better way to track cable facilities, assignments, equipment, and communications resources across large, demanding installations.

Drawing on their combined technical and industry experience, Len and Dick created the Configuration Assignment Information Retrieval System—CAIRS. What began as a practical cable-management solution became the foundation of Unique Communication Solutions.

The company started as a small, family-led organization built around a simple idea: listen closely to customers, understand the operational problem, and build technology that genuinely solves it. That philosophy continues to shape Unique today.

Over the decades, CAIRS has grown far beyond its original purpose. It has evolved into an integrated platform for telecommunications management, network operations, emergency communications, and E9-1-1 and NG9-1-1 services. Unique has grown as well, bringing together family, friends, engineers, developers, support professionals, and industry experts united by the same commitment that inspired the first CAIRS system.

Our story is one of steady innovation grounded in real-world experience. We do not build technology simply because it is possible. We build it because our customers depend on communications systems that must be accurate, resilient, interoperable, and ready when they matter most.
